Nassau County Police Job Benefits

Salary Range - $40,000 to $48,000 after first year.  Over $100,000 a year after 8 years.

Extra Pay for: Night Differential (12% increase), Uniform Allowances, Holiday Pay, Overtime.

All uniforms and equipment are supplied by the Department. A yearly uniform cleaning allotment is provided to each officer.

Promotions to the ranks of Sergeant, Lieutenant and Captain are through competitive Civil Service Examination. Positions above the rank of Captain are appointed by the Commissioner of Police.

Flexible Work Schedules - Two 12 hour tour days of work and then 3 full days off.

Patrols assigned area in a radio equipped car, on motorcycle, or on  foot to prevent and discover the commission of crimes; answers calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, domestic disturbances and other misdemeanors or felonies; directs traffic, enforces traffic laws, and arrests traffic violators.  At scenes of crime, administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses and makes arrests; testifies in court on arrests made.  Performs related work as required.

 

NASSAU POLICE DEPARTMENT MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates must meet the following requirements:
RESIDENCY: : Candidates must be legal residents of Nassau County and/or a contiguous county (Suffolk, Kings, Queens, Manhattan, Bronx, Staten Island and Westchester) by date of appointment from the eligible list established as a result of this examination.
The following Village/Special District Police Departments give preference in appointment to successful candidates who are legal residents of the appointing jurisdiction at the time of their application for the written examination and who maintain said residence continually until they are appointed from the eligible list established as a result of this examination:

NOTE: The Village of Rockville Centre gives preference to residents of Nassau, Suffolk, Queens, and Kings counties.
AGE: Candidates must be at least 17 years of age and have not reached their 35th birthday on or before the date of commencement of the written test (August 13, 2007). Candidates shall not be considered for appointment until they reach their 21st birthday. Time spent in military service as defined in Section 243 of the Military Law may be deducted from actual age up to a maximum of 6 years (Section 58, Civil Service Law).
(Veterans: If you have reached your 35th birthday by the date of commencement of the written test (August 13, 2007), you must submit your DD 214 - military separation papers with your application.)

EDUCATION: Candidates for the following Village Police Departments must be high school graduates or must possess a high school equivalency diploma by date of appointment. G.E.D's are acceptable (high school level):

No college education is required to take the written examination; however, 32 credits of college education are required for appointment. Those candidates who have not attained that level of education but are otherwise eligible for appointment will remain on the eligible list and will become eligible for appointment after they have obtained the necessary college credits.

Candidates for Nassau County*, Centre Island, Floral Park, Freeport, Garden City, Great Neck Estates, Kings Point, Lynbrook, Malverne, Old Westbury, Oyster Bay Cove, Rockville Centre, Sands Point, and the Port Washington Police District must have obtained 32 college credits from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university by the date of appointment. This requirement does not prohibit those with less than 32 college credits or no college credits from taking the examination.
Candidates for the Nassau County Police Department must have obtained 32 college credits from a regionally accredited or New York State registered college or university by the date of appointment subject to the qualifications and selection criteria for Nassau County that are set forth in a Consent Decree in a civil action titled United States v. Nassau County 77 Civ. 1884 (JM) in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York.

*QUALIFICATION AND SELECTION CRITERIA FOR NASSAU COUNTY: The Consent Decree that was entered on April 21, 1982 in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of New York in the action titled United States v. Nassau County 77 Civ. 1884 (JM) requires Nassau County to develop and to utilize qualifications and selection criteria for hire within the NCPD which have no discriminatory impact or which have been validated in accordance with Title VII, and with the Uniform Guidelines on Employee Selection Procedures issued pursuant thereto, 28 C.F.R. 50.14, 29 C.F.R. 1607, 31 C.F.R. 51.53 or successor guidelines.

The United States and Nassau County have agreed that the use of a 32 college credit requirement is lawful if that use does not have an adverse impact on blacks, Hispanics and females in recruitment or in selection. In no event, however, shall such an educational requirement be a prerequisite to taking an examination for selection as a Police Officer for the NCPD; and when any college educational requirement is used for appointment, persons who do not meet the requirement but otherwise are eligible shall remain on the eligible list, and will become eligible for appointment to the next NCPD recruit class after they have obtained the necessary college credits.

LICENSE: Possession of a valid New York State's Driver's license is required at time of certification from the eligible list.

CITIZENSHIP: Candidates must be United States citizens at time of appointment.
 

Candidates must compete in the required written examination and pass additional screening
procedures.

Candidates will be required to submit to a background investigation prior to appointment.

Appointments are determined on an individual basis by the Nassau County Civil Service Commission, however, anyone with a felony conviction may be excluded from being a Nassau County Police Officer.

DUTIES: Performs general law enforcement duties, and patrols an assigned area for the protection of lives and property and the enforcement of laws and ordinances over which the Police Department has jurisdiction; performs related duties as required.
NOTE: Work shifts rotate on a 24-hour-a-day seven-day-a-week basis.

VACANCIES: The use of eligible lists resulting from examinations may be limited to a sufficient number of candidates to fill vacancies, and the processing of candidates beyond the written examination may be similarly limited. As the need arises, additional candidates will be processed for certification from the lists. The first group of candidates, as determined by the scores on the written examination, including veteran's/section 85a/b credits, will be called for the subsequent tests and evaluations. Also included in this group will be those persons who are eligible for resident's preference - SEE RESIDENCY.
The appointing authorities may utilize the results of this examination to appoint individuals who have not reached their 21st birthday to positions as Police Cadets at salaries that may be less than the salaries paid to Police Officers.
