Suffolk County Police Officers ensure and enhance public safety for all members of the communities of Suffolk County. Officers are assigned a patrol area in a radio equipped car, on motorcycle, or on foot to prevent and discover the commission of crimes.  Suffolk Police Officers answer calls and complaints involving automobile accidents, domestic disturbances and other misdemeanors or felonies.  Officers direct traffic, enforce traffic laws, and arrest traffic violators.  At scenes of crime, a Suffolk Police Officer administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses and makes arrests.  In addition, Suffolk Police Officers testify in court with regards to arrests that have been made.  The work of a Suffolk Police Officer encompasses everything from traditional patrol duties to highly specialized investigations. Officers must be prepared to deal with a never ending variety of situations and people.  They respond and investigate all types of cases including, but not limited, to domestic incidents, missing children, assaults, burglaries, robberies and homicides.

Suffolk Police render general assistance to the public every day in wide ranging situations including disabled motorists, providing directions, explaining the law to citizens and providing counseling to students.
