All You Need to Know About the New York State Court Officer Training Academy

Court officers play a fundamental role in maintaining order both inside and outside court facilities. In New York, court officers are responsible for protecting staff, public and justices in courthouses. They are also capable of enforcing bench warrants and making arrests.

To become a court officer, individuals will have to complete a rigorous 2-year long law enforcement traineeship at the NY State Court Officers Training Academy. Trainees begin their journey at the academy at Grade-14 and end it when they’re promoted to Grade-18. This is when they’re officially recognized as peace officers.

Top Notch Salaries

The salary for court officers in New York ranges approximately from $40,000/year if you’re on Grade-14 and goes all the way up to $70,000/year if you’ve reached Grade-18.

Apart from this, court officers in the counties of Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Rockland and New York City can get paid an extra $3,697 each year to offset living costs in the area they’re serving in. For example, some trainee court officers from Orange County received an extra $1,848 annually, as part of their location pay differential.

Excellent Compensation

Alongside a decent salary range, New York state court officers get 12 paid leaves for public holidays and 20 paid leaves for vacation during the first year of their employment.

Vacation days increase to 27 after 6 years of employment. Additionally, court officers receive retirement benefits, health insurance, fixed allowances and the option to register for a deferred compensation scheme.

Promotional Opportunities

Court officers don’t have to grind on a desk job every day. They’ve got ample opportunity to perform functions outside the courtroom.

For example, tasks that aren’t assigned to special units such as Command Center Operations or Mobile Security Patrol can be taken up by court officers who wish to spend time working outside the courtroom. However, you’ll have to clear a promotional test to become a Court Officer-Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain or Major.

Court officers can also try out for the position of a chief court officer and remain eligible for future promotions to the Department of Public Safety and the Applicant Background Investigation Unit.
