What is covered in the Class?

NYS Court Officer & Suffolk County Police Classes:  Our classes are a three session preparatory course to help prepare you for the New York State Court Officer and Suffolk County Police Exams.  The NYS Court Officer classes will cover each section of the NYS Court Officer Exam including remembering facts & information, reading, understanding, & interpreting written material, applying facts & information to given situations, clerical checking, court record keeping and questions addressing personality traits that are associated with successful performance of law enforcement duties. The Suffolk County Police Classes will include all cognitive ability assessment, required reasoning ability, work, school life experience questions and questions addressing personality traits that are associated with successful performance of law enforcement duties.

Our classes will also give you information on the entire hiring process including the background investigation, physical ability test, psychological evaluation and oral interview.

What is the benefit of taking classes for a civil service exam?

Our classes only cover materials for the specific exam you are taking therefore; there is no wasted study time.  You will be given a booklet of 40 to 50 pages at each class with specific questions geared only towards the exam you are taking.  Our classes will also give you information on the entire hiring process such as the physical ability exam, the psychological evaluation, the background check and the oral interview.  There are classroom instructors that can answer any questions you may have and each instructor has been hand picked because they have graduated through the ranks in their fields by being outstanding exam takers. Our school has been preparing candidates for these exams for over 45 years, in fact, we are the only school doing so.

Is there a study guide I can purchase?

We do not recommend study guides because many of them are compilations of many different civil service exams in one book and the materials can also be outdated.  Each agency or department gives a different type of exam so if you a purchasing a study guide for “Police Officer” that book can have sample test questions from Police Exams around the county and may not even apply to the exam that you are trying to prepare for because each police exam is different.

Does applying for the classes sign me up to take the exam?

No, you must apply on your own for each exam with the appropriate Civil Service agency during the open filing period for each exam.

What happens if I miss a class?

If you miss a class at your designated location you can make it up at any of our other locations but you must make sure you are going to the correct lesson number  1, 2, or 3 at that make up location so that you obtain the correct materials.

Can I retake the class at another location?

No, you can only take one class for each lesson number at your designated location or a makeup location.  You will not be able to retake a lesson that you have already taken.

What happens if I can't make my scheduled class or the make up class for a lesson?

If you are going to miss a class completely you should email our office at customerservice@civilservicesuccess.com and explain that you will not be able to attend the class at all and we can email you your lesson so you can work on it before the next class date. If you have any questions we recommend coming to the next class a little early for the instructor to answer any questions you may have.

I filed for an exam and haven't received my notice on where to take the exam, what do I do?

Usually you won’t hear anything from the agency in which you are taking the exam until about 2 to 3 weeks before the exam itself. You should receive a letter in the mail from the appropriate agency telling you when and where to appear, what to bring and what not to bring with you to the exam, etc. If you do not hear anything 2 weeks before the exam we recommend calling the appropriate agency so they may mail or email you a new notice.

How long does it take to get my test results?

It can take anywhere from 4 to 12 months depending upon which agency is giving the exam with the majority of agencies giving you your results within 6 months.

What happens after I get my test results?

Upon passing the civil service exam and meeting the minimum job requirements you name is added to eligible lists of applicants and ranked according to test scores. When a job vacancy occurs, the hiring agency will call applicants from that list from the highest test score on down the list. If you are ranked high enough on the eligible list you may be contacted by the hiring agency for an interview, physical and psychological exam.
