Improving Your Cognitive Abilities: What You Need to Know

1) Eat Healthy

When we’re tired and stressed, we’re more likely to eat comfort foods and less likely to opt for healthier options like salads. It’s important to take time out of your day to refuel with healthy meals and snacks. Nutritious meals will not only give you energy but will also help improve your cognitive ability.

Eat protein because it helps with memory formation. Make sure you get enough carbs for energy but avoid refined sugar or white carbs that can make you crash. And healthy fats are vital for your brain health! Get plenty in your diet by eating nuts and seeds, avocados, salmon, and olive oil.

2) Sleep Well

Getting enough sleep for at least 8 hours is essential for improving memory, alertness, focus, and performance. Sleep deprivation not only contributes to drowsiness but also affects your energy levels and moods. You can’t be on top of your game if you’re drowsy or irritable. In addition, research shows that a lack of sleep can weaken your immune system, increasing your risk of a cold or flu.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your brain doesn’t have a chance to rest and recover. Sleep deprivation can also slow down your response time and make it harder for you to concentrate. Make sure you’re getting at least 7-8 hours of shuteye every night, if not more!

3) Exercise Regularly

Physical activity increases blood flow and oxygen flow throughout your body, helping improve brain function and allowing you to think more clearly. Engaging in a regular exercise routine is one of the best things you can do for your overall health and cognitive abilities. Start small with a walk every day, work up from there, and track your progress.

4) Stay Positive

Being positive has a whole slew of benefits, including boosting your immune system and allowing you to focus better on specific tasks. Additionally, studies show that positive people perform better than those tend to focus on the negative.

Take out some time each day to visualize what you want, find what you love about yourself, and remind yourself of your goals regularly.

You’ll be surprised by how much more productive—and focused—you can be when you give yourself encouragement instead of criticism. And don’t forget: sometimes, if we try too hard to be optimistic, it can backfire.

5) Meditate

Meditation has been proven time and again to be useful in improving memory and attention span. It’s no coincidence that some of today’s most successful entrepreneurs, such as Tesla founder Elon Musk do it regularly. If you want a significant improvement in these two cognitive abilities, meditation is an excellent place to start.

You can either meditate daily for ten minutes at a time or do so twice weekly for twenty minutes each day. However, you decide to do it, do make sure that your sessions are consistent—it doesn’t matter how effective they are if they don’t happen regularly! The bottom line: practice makes perfect when it comes to cognition.

6) Drink Tea or Coffee

Caffeine is a known stimulant, so it’s no surprise that many people reach for coffee or tea when they want an extra kick. Green tea in particular has been shown to improve performance on certain cognitive tests and reduce anxiety, making it a good choice for anyone taking exams. It may also help you stave off dementia and Alzheimer’s.
