What Is the New York State Court Officers Academy?

The NYSC Officers Academy is a training center for all personnel associated with the state court system. Often described as peace officers, there are currently a total of 22 full time serving court officers working with the Academy.

According to the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services, these 22 officers are also certified police instructors. There’s also an adjunct faculty of instructors at the Academy. They’re responsible for carrying out different training programs across the state of New York.

What Is the Structure of the New York State Court Officers Academy?

The Academy was founded in 1972. It’s responsible for training nearly 4,500 state court officers and some 2,000 other peace officers across the state of New York. Initially, court officers were screened and trained by the police departments of their local area. However, the Academy has its own set of instructors today who function independently of the NYPD and other agencies.

What’s it Like Training with the New York State Court Officers Academy?

The Academy recruits court officer trainees after a series of comprehensive written and other screening tests. The trainees are expected to participate in a 4-month long peace officer training program at Castleton-On-Hudson. The program involves lots of physical activity and teaches trainees how to operate firearms, provide first aid support and self-defense tactics.

The trainees are also required to complete a dynamic academic curriculum that covers:

  • Penal Law of the State of New York
  • Court structures
  • Criminal Procedural Law
  • Prisoner handling
  • Counter-terrorism training
  • Pepper spray and baton use
  • Evacuation strategies
  • Critical events management
  • Written and oral communication skills
  • Law enforcement
  • Awareness of mental health and domestic violence cases

There are many more topics covered in the Academy’s main curriculum. Once the trainees have completed a 14-week training course, they’ll receive certification from the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services that they’re now officially Peace Officers of New York state.
